Exciting seminars for PhD students – Career Management

Dear PhD students,

We are excited to bring you two seminars this spring about career management for PhD students. The presenters are Asst. Prof. Dr Casey Kennington from Boise State University, US and Prof. Dr Artur Lugmayr from University of Western Australia (UWA) & Edith Cowan University (ECU), Australia. Both are distinguished researchers with broad experience within the academic field. More info can be found below.

We hope you will take this opportunity to learn and to develop your future career as a researcher!

Seminar 1: Skills for Managing your Academic Self and Dissertation Writing
Casey Kennington, PhD.

Dissertation writing can be an invigorating and enjoyable process. In this talk, I will give some tips and strategies for preparing for, managing, and writing your dissertation. I will also talk about how those skills generalize to managing yourself in an academic setting, a setting with many complex facets including teaching, writing, researching, service, networking, among other things. I draw upon my own PhD experience and my experience as an assistant professor since 2016.

I received my bachelor’s degree in computer science from Brigham Young University. My master’s work was done in the Erasmus Mundus European Masters in Language and Communication Technology program, where I spent my first year at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany, and my second year at Nancy 2 University (now Lorraine University) in Nancy, France.  I graduated with a PhD from Bielefeld University in Germany advised by David Schlangen. During my PhD studies, I spent 3 months as an intern at Honda Research Institute, supervised by Kotaro Funakoshi. My post-doctoral work was in the KogniHome project at Bielefeld working on dialogue management for an intelligent apartment project. I am currently an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department of Boise State University.

When:  March 3rd, 17:00 – 18:00 (GMT+1)
              Meeting ID: 612 5171 4806

Seminar 2: Science Management “for Dummies” – Tools for Successful Early Career Scholars
Artur Lugmayr, PhD.

This motivational talk is addressed towards early career researchers, doctoral students, and others at the beginning of their scientific careers. This talk should help future scholars to succeed in their future careers, as others should learn from our mistakes or successes. The talk will briefly discuss 1) management and personal skills; 2) getting cited and publishing in the best for a; 3) working and management in universities; 4) improving teaching skills and designing curricula and lectures, and 5) collaboration with industry and other stakeholders.

The talk is based on the open-access book “Management and Leading Creative Universities – Foundations of Successful Science Management: A Hands-On Guide for (Future) Academics” which is freely available on http://www.ambientmediaassociation.org/Journal/index.php/series/issue/view/33

The talk is targeted towards any discipline and will help early-stage future scholars in understanding the ‘job’ researcher. For senior staff and supervisors, this talk helps to keep the team motivated and on track to generate high-level scientific outputs.
